What actually happens after you call
Step one. We triage the call
If water is coming in we ask four things. Your address. Whether water is actively running or whether it stopped when the rain did. Roughly where in the house. Whether the power is still on in that part of the house. Then you get a real arrival window rather than a comfortable one.
Step two. We put the inspection on the schedule
If it is not an emergency the conversation goes differently. We ask what you are seeing, how old the roof is if you happen to know, and whether anybody has already been out to look at it. Then we book a time that works for you.
Step three. Somebody gets on the roof, then in the attic
We work the flashings and the penetrations before the open field, because that is where the water usually is. Then the attic, because a fair amount of what gets called a roof leak in February is condensation on a cold deck and you will never tell the difference from the driveway.
Step four. You get the photo report
Findings documented by slope and elevation, with photos, in writing. If it is a repair, we say repair. If your roof is nine years old and somebody has already told you it is finished, we will tell you that too. You keep the report whether or not you hire us.
Step five. You decide, on your schedule
Nobody asks for a signature on the hood of a truck. If a storm claim is in play, West Virginia law does not permit us to negotiate that claim with your carrier, so we document and you submit. The mechanics are on our roof insurance claims page.

Do you charge to come out and look at my roof?
The inspection is free and you get a photo report out of it whether or not you hire us. Emergency work is the exception, because a tarp at midnight is labor and material spent to stop damage that night, and West Virginia law allows reasonable and customary charges for emergency services. You are told that charge before the work starts, not on an invoice afterward.

What should I have ready when I call?
The property address, roughly how old the roof is if you know, and what you are seeing. If a storm is involved, the date it happened. If you have already filed a claim, the claim number and whether an adjuster has been out yet. If you do not have any of that, call anyway. None of it is required to get on the schedule.

Can you talk to my insurance company for me?
No, and any roofer in West Virginia who says he will is telling you he either does not know the law or does not care about it. What we do instead is document the damage by slope and elevation, hand you a photo report with the date of loss on it, meet your adjuster on the roof, and put anything the scope missed in writing for you to submit yourself. We also will not touch your deductible.

How do I check that a roofing contractor is licensed in West Virginia?
Ask for the West Virginia contractor license number, then look for that number in the contractor’s advertising and posted at the job site, because state law requires it in both places. The West Virginia Contractor Licensing Board keeps a public lookup. Roofing sits in its own classification, so confirm the contractor is licensed for roofing specifically rather than just carrying a general number. Two minutes settles whether the number is real and current.

Can I cancel a roofing contract after I sign it?
Under West Virginia’s Storm Scammer Consumer Protection Act at section 46A-6M, you get five business days to cancel a roofing contract after your insurer notifies you that all or part of the claim is not covered, and no contractor may take an advance payment before that window closes. Emergency work to stop further damage is the one carve out. A contractor who wants a signature and a check on the hood of his truck the same afternoon he knocked has already answered the question you were asking.

Who issues the permit for a roof in Martinsburg?
It depends on which side of the city line your property sits on. Inside city limits, permits run through the City of Martinsburg planning, zoning and building department. Outside that line it is the Berkeley County building permits and inspections office.
