4.9 STARS FROM 50 GOOGLE REVIEWSCustomer Reviews
Black Stone Roofing holds 4.9 stars from 50 Google reviews. The live feed further down this page comes straight from Google, so what you read there is what the people who hired us actually wrote, not a selection we typed up ourselves. Every roofing company in the Eastern Panhandle will tell you its customers are happy. This page is about how to check.

What to look for before you trust anybody’s star rating
Since October 21, 2024, fake reviews have not just been dishonest, they have been illegal. The Federal Trade Commission’s Rule on the Use of Consumer Reviews and Testimonials, at 16 CFR Part 465, bans writing or buying reviews from people who never used the business, bans paying for a review that expresses a particular sentiment, bans undisclosed reviews from company insiders, and bans suppressing the negative ones to make the average look better than it is. The rule carries civil penalties. Knowing it exists changes how you read every roofing profile in this county, including ours.

A flawless 5.0 across a large count
Read that one twice. A roofing company that has done a few hundred roofs has annoyed somebody, because roofing involves weather, dumpsters, noise at seven in the morning, and decking nobody could see until the old roof came off. A profile with no friction anywhere in it has either done very few jobs or has been curated. Ours is 4.9, and the paragraph below explains exactly what that costs us.
A cluster of reviews on the same two days
Sort by newest and watch the dates. Real reviews arrive the way real jobs finish, scattered across months and seasons, heavier in the spring and after storms. Fifteen five star reviews posted inside one week, then nothing for a year, is the signature of a campaign rather than a customer base.
Reviews that never mention roofing
Open a few and look for detail only a customer could know: what went wrong, which part of the house, how long the crew took, what the cleanup looked like. Generic praise with no specifics is the cheapest thing on the internet to manufacture. Specific complaints, and specific answers to them, are the hardest.
Reviewer accounts with one review each
Click through to the profile of whoever wrote it. Local Guides and ordinary people who review restaurants and hardware stores are hard to fabricate at volume. An account created the same month, holding one review, for one roofer, is a data point about that roofer.
An offer of anything in exchange for the review
This one is doubly prohibited. Google’s own policy bars content posted because a business offered payment, a discount, or free goods and services, including anything offered in exchange for revising or taking down a bad review. The federal rule bars compensation conditioned on the sentiment of the review. West Virginia has a third layer for storm work, since the Storm Scammer Consumer Protection Act already bars a contractor from handing you a gift card or a free upgrade for signing. Three separate rules point the same direction.
No answer under the bad ones
A one star review is not the tell. What the owner wrote underneath it is. Look for a reply that names the job, admits what happened, and says what was done about it. Silence, or a reply that attacks the customer, tells you what your call will sound like if something goes wrong on your roof in year three.
What 4.9 stars from 50 reviews actually means
Star ratings get quoted constantly and examined almost never. Since we are asking you to weigh ours, here is the whole thing opened up, including the part that is not flattering.

We are short of perfect, and here is by how much
Google publishes the average to one decimal place, so a posted 4.9 is a rounded figure. Across 50 reviews, a rating that rounds to 4.9 puts our total somewhere between 243 and 247 star points out of a possible 250. That means we are three to seven points short of a clean sweep. Somebody in Berkeley County was not thrilled with us, and the number says so in public. We would rather you understand that than assume it away.
Fifty reviews is a real sample, not a handful
Fifty is enough that one unhappy Saturday cannot swing the average, and enough that a good run cannot hide a pattern either. Read the count and the score together. A 5.0 built on four reviews tells you almost nothing, and a 4.6 built on four hundred tells you a great deal.
The feed below is live, and we cannot edit it
The reviews on this page are pulled from our Google Business Profile as they stand right now. We do not retype them, trim them, or reorder them. A business owner cannot delete a Google review he dislikes. He can report one he believes breaks a policy, and Google decides. That limitation is the reason a Google rating is worth more than a wall of quotes typed into a website with no way to trace them.
We ask, and that is the entire extent of it
After a job wraps we ask you to leave an honest review. That is legal and normal. What is not legal is conditioning anything on what the review says, and we do not do it. No discount, no gift card, no rebate, no check back, no quiet request to take a bad one down. If any roofer offers you something for a review, you have learned something about his other paperwork.
Check where the reviewers actually are
Reviews for a local contractor should come from people in the market he serves. Ours were left by homeowners and property managers around Martinsburg, Berkeley County, the rest of the Eastern Panhandle, and the northern Shenandoah Valley. If a roofing company advertising into your town carries reviews from four states away and none from anywhere near you, that is a fact about who he actually works for.
Reviews are one source, not the only one
Verify the license separately. The West Virginia Contractor Licensing Board publishes a lookup you can search by company name, and Berkeley County Permits and Inspections holds the permit record showing who pulled it. Ask for the certificate of insurance to come to you from the insurance agency rather than forwarded by the contractor. Star ratings are opinion. Those three are records.
Confirm the company is where it says it is
A good share of the roofing companies advertising into this region are headquartered somewhere else and running template pages with your city name dropped into them. Our address is 1886 Winchester Ave, Martinsburg, WV 25405. It is on the map further down this page, it is where the trucks come from, and you are welcome to drive by it.
The things a star rating cannot tell you
4.9 stars from 50 Google reviews
Left by people in Berkeley County, the Eastern Panhandle, and the northern Shenandoah Valley who had us on their roof. Read them, then go read the ones for whoever is bidding against us. Compare the dates, the detail, and the replies under the bad ones.
Family owned since 2016
Same family, same phone number, still answering it the following spring when the callbacks start. A review is only worth what the company behind it is worth in year three, and plenty of the outfits with impressive ratings will not be reachable by then.
Licensed, bonded, and insured
Licensed in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Florida. Five licenses means five sets of renewals, five insurance filings, and five regulators who can take away your ability to work. Verify all of it independently rather than taking a rating on faith.
A real address you can drive to
1886 Winchester Ave, Martinsburg, WV 25405, in Berkeley County. Not a mailbox rented so a template page can claim your city. Where a roofer sits is checkable in about a minute, and a five star rating attached to nowhere in particular is worth exactly nothing.
What we do with what you write, good or bad

We ask once, after the work is finished
The request comes after the final walk, when you have actually seen the roof and the cleanup. Nothing is attached to it. We do not ask what you plan to say, and we do not ask again if you would rather not.
It posts to Google, not to us
You write it in your own Google account and it goes live on our Business Profile. It never routes through our office first, which is the whole point. Any system that screens your feedback before deciding whether to publish it is the practice the Federal Trade Commission rule was written to stop.
The bad ones stay up
We cannot delete them and we would not if we could. The only reviews any business may ask Google to look at are ones that break a stated policy, and Google makes that call, not the business. A profile with nothing critical on it after fifty reviews should raise your eyebrow rather than settle your mind.
Somebody answers it publicly
Replies name the job, address what actually happened, and say what was done about it. That reply is written for the next person reading, not for the person who complained, because how a contractor handles the worst day on a job is the only preview you get of your own worst day.
A complaint gets routed, not managed
If the review describes something wrong with the roof, it goes to whoever ran your job and you get a call. You call the same number you called the first time and we come back out. A review is not a customer service ticket to be closed, it is a roof that needs looking at.
The pattern gets read
Three people mentioning the same thing is not three complaints, it is one process problem. Cleanup, communication on date changes, and how rotted decking gets shown to a homeowner are all things that got tightened because somebody said so in public.

Questions about the rating on this page

-
How many Google reviews does Black Stone Roofing have?
4.9 stars from 50 Google reviews. The feed on this page is pulled live from our Google Business Profile, so if the count or the score has moved since this page was written, what you see in the feed is the current number and it is the one to trust.
-
Why is the rating 4.9 and not 5.0?
Because not every job over ten years has gone perfectly. Google rounds to one decimal place, so a 4.9 across 50 reviews puts our total between 243 and 247 star points out of a possible 250, which means we are three to seven points short of a clean sweep. Roofing involves weather, dumpsters, crews starting at seven in the morning, and decking nobody can see until the old roof is off. A roofing company with a spotless record across fifty jobs has either done very few of them or has been managing the profile.
-
Do you pay for reviews or offer anything in exchange for one?
No. We ask you to leave an honest review after the job is finished and that is the entire extent of it. No discount, no gift card, no rebate, and no request to take a bad one down. Three separate rules point the same way here: Google’s policy bars reviews posted because a business offered payment, discounts, or free goods and services, the Federal Trade Commission rule at 16 CFR Part 465 bars compensation conditioned on the sentiment of a review, and West Virginia’s Storm Scammer Consumer Protection Act already bars a contractor from handing you a gift card or a free upgrade for signing.
-
Can a business delete a bad Google review?
No. A business owner cannot remove a review he dislikes. He can report one he believes breaks a stated Google policy, and Google decides whether it comes down. That limitation is exactly why a Google rating is worth more than a page of quotes typed into a website with no way to trace who wrote them. Since October 21, 2024, selectively suppressing negative reviews to make an average look better has also been prohibited under the Federal Trade Commission’s Rule on the Use of Consumer Reviews and Testimonials.
-
Where else can I check on you besides Google?
Verify the things that are records rather than opinions. The West Virginia Contractor Licensing Board publishes a lookup you can search by company name. Berkeley County Permits and Inspections holds the permit record showing who pulled the permit on a job. Ask for the certificate of insurance to come to you directly from the insurance agency rather than as a file forwarded by us, because a call to the agent confirms the policy is in force today. We have no problem with you checking any of it.
-
How do I leave a review after you finish my roof?
Search Black Stone Roofing on Google Maps or Google Search, open the profile, and use the review button there. It posts from your own account straight to our Business Profile without routing through our office first. Say what actually happened, including anything that went sideways, because a review that names specifics is the only kind that helps the next homeowner in Martinsburg decide anything.
